Round 11: Curtain falls in the World Youth Chess Championships 2002

One of the most exciting World Youth Chess Championships of the last years came to an end. Consequently, most of the great favorites failed to meet expectations in this tournament. In the categories of Boys and Girls-18 Berkes (HUN) and Paetz (GER) remained calm and conquered the title of The World Champion. In the category of Boys-16, Pantsulaia (GEO) even if he shared the same points with Gerzhoy (ISR) finally won the gold medal thanks to the tie-break criteria. The same happened in the Category of Girls-16 where Tchistiakova (RUS) won the gold medal over Dzagnitze (GEO). The surprise was made in the last round by Lenic (CRO) in the group of Boys-14, while in the same category of Girls Rogule (LAT) won in the last round and made it to the top of the standings.

In the category of Boys-12 Nepomniachtchi (RUS) edged Carlsen (NOR) for the gold medal when the two tied in first place with 9 points apiece. In the category of Girls-12 Tan (CHN) clinched the title ahead of the pre-tournament favourite, An.Muzychuk (UKR). Finally, in the group of Boys-10 Safarli (AZE) tied in first place with Ding (CHN), but won the gold medal on a better tie-break criterion. Stock (CRO) finished alone at the top of the ranking in the category of Girls-10 and won the gold medal after an impressive performance.
