Welcome!
The international tournament "Acropolis 2007"
will be held from August 14 until August 22 at the
hotel President (43 Kifisias Ave.) in Athens. This
is the 22nd year that the tournament with the
longest history compared to any other international
tournament in Greece is organized.
The very first "Acropolis" was held in 1968 and
three other tournaments followed in the 70's between
1977 and 1979. In the 80's there wasn't any activity
except for the year 1981, while the last 17 years
the Greek Chess Federation has organized the
tournament of Acropolis in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997,
2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006.
"Acropolis 2007" is co-organized by the Greek Chess
Federation and the Prefecture of Athens thanks to
the eagerness shown by Mr. Giannis Sgouros, a man
whose name is bound with great triumphs of Greek
sports.
The crucial support of the Prefecture enforces the
effort of the federation for the development and
promotion of chess and reflects the sensitivity of
the Prefecture towards cultural and athletic events
that ameliorate our everyday life and promote the
city of Athens on an international scale.
Sponsor of the games is PROMOT E.I. Lainopoulos
company. The Greek Chess Federation hopes that this
fruitful cooperation continues and grows stronger in
the years to come.
"Acropolis 2007" is part of the tournaments of the
Association of Chess Professionals, known as "ACP
Tour", and will be held as a unified international
tournament for men and women with a limited number
of invitations, in order to ensure high playing
standards. Eighty to 90 strong chess players from
about 20 countries are expected to participate.
The Greek Chess Federation welcomes all players and
participants and wishes them the very best of
success!
